In the science fiction television series Star Trek, Captain Garrovick was the commanding officer of the U.S.S. Farragut, the first starship posting of a young James T. Kirk. Captain Garrovick and half of the Farragut's crew were killed when the ship was attacked by an alien creature which drained its victims of blood. Garrovick had been Kirk's commanding officer from the day Kirk graduated from Starfleet Academy; Kirk always regarded Captain Garrovick as one of the finest men he had ever known, and took his captain's death very hard. Garrovick had a son who later followed in his footsteps and joined Starfleet, later serving on the Enterprise under Kirk's command.
Captain Garrovick's first name has not been revealed, although most fanon materials list it as Charles. Garrovick's son has met two different fates in the Star Trek novels - in "Home is the Hunter", the younger Garrovick is killed while rescuing a group of children from an attack, while the later novel "In the Name of Honor" follows a different continuity in which Garrovick is not killed, but reaches the rank of Commander and the position of first officer on a Federation starship.
