Caraga - Definition and Overview |
Caraga is the newest region of the Philippines, also designated as Region XIII. It is composed of 4 provinces, namely: Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. The name Caraga is a corruption of the word "Kalagan" which means the land of the spirits.
Caraga Region has a total land area of 19,030 km². Majority of the people are Visaya-Cebuano while the rest are indigenous. Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur belong to the 20+ poorest provinces of the country. The poor economic condition of the region's families is the main reason for its low performance.
Caraga is also a municipality in the province of Davao Oriental.
