Carbonic anhydrase - Definition and Overview

Carbonic anhydrase (EC 4.2.1.1) is an enzyme that assists the rapid interconversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbonic acid, protons, and bicarbonate ions. It increases the efficiency of the reaction about a million-fold. Its active site contains a zinc ion. For more information, please view the Protein Data Bank's entry on carbonic anhydrase here (http://www.rcsb.org/pdb/molecules/pdb49_1.html).
