Cardiff Barrage - Definition and Overview

The Cardiff Bay Barrage is one of the largest investment and engineering projects to have taken place in the UK. Completed in 1999 and measuring 1.1 km in length, the barrage impounds two of the main rivers in South Wales - the Taff and Ely - to create a 2 km² (500 acre) freshwater inland bay (Cardiff Bay) and a new permanent waterfront of some 12.8 km.
