NOTE: The taxonomy is UNCONFIRMED. The type Caridina japonica is not found in ITIS (http://www.itis.usda.gov/) (Integrated Taxonomic Information System)
According to different sources the Caridina Japonica was introduced into the world of aquarium by Takashi Amano in the early eighties. Takashi Amano is a well known photographer and aquarist. He would have been the first who noticed the useful characteristic of eating algae of these shrimps and started using them in his show aquariums.
The most important characteristic of CJ is the opaque, transparent body covered with brown reddish points of +/- 0,3 mm. On their sides this may look like a broken line of reddish colour. The eyes are black. Their back has a white stripe that goes from their head to their tail.
You can identify the males from the females easily. The lower row of reddish dots lining their body is very like dots. These 'dots' or 'points' tends to elongated on this lower row in females.
