Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg - Definition and Overview

Caroline Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg (born November 27,1957) is the daughter of U.S. President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline. Since the 1999 death of John F. Kennedy Jr., she is the only child of John F. Kennedy still alive. Caroline Kennedy should not be confused with her sister-in-law, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy.

After the assasination of her father in 1963, she lived with her mother and brother in New York City (in the penthouse apartment at 1040 Fifth Avenue). In 1972, she went to Concord Academy in Massachusetts. She worked on a documentary on the lives of Tennessee coal miners. She later interned with both her uncle senator Ted Kennedy, and the New York Daily News. She began working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1980, where she met her husband, the noted exhibit designer Edwin Schlossberg.

She graduated from Harvard University and from Columbia Law School. She and Ellen Alderman have written two books together on civil liberties:

  • In Our Defense - The Bill of Rights In Action (1990) and
  • The Right to Privacy (1995)

She was one of the founders of the Profiles in Courage Award. That is an award given annually to someone who exemplifies the type of courage examined in her fathers book of the same name: the courage to do what is right, rather than what is politically expedient.

She is currently (As of 2004) the president of the Kennedy Library Foundation, and is the chairperson of the American Ballet Theatre.
