Carrera Panamericana - Definition and Overview

The Carrera Panamericana was a race on open roads in Mexico, similar to the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio in Italy.

After the Mexican section of the Panamerican Highway was completed in the early 1950s, a race was established to celebrate this road.

In 1952, the Mercedes-Benz of Kling/Klenk won with a 300 SL Gullwing despite a vulture had hit the windscreen and injured the codriver.

Due to safety concerns, the high speed race was discontinued in the late 1950s.

Porsche derived the top name for their cars, Carrera, from this race.
