Cavnic - Definition and Overview

Cavnic (Hungarian: Kapnikbánya, German: Kapnik) is a mining town in the North of Romania, in the Maramures county. Its population was 5,200 in 2002.

Situated in a mountainous region, the town has altitudes between 550 and 1050 m. Despite not having the official status of tourist resort, the town impresses visitors with its spectacular mountainous landscape.
