Centinela Adobe - Definition and Overview

Centinela Adobe is a museum that is dedicated to Daniel Freeman. The adobe structure is the oldest building in the area, completed in 1834 by Ignacio Machado. It is called the Birthplace of Inglewood

Machado used it as his headquarters for the 2,200-acre Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela, named for the Centinela Spring which still flows nearby. Machado owned it only briefly, and then it passed through many hands before finally being purchased by Daniel Freeman in 1885. Freeman became a partner in the land firm that subdivided the ranch for the town of Inglewood. (After his hometown in Canada).

The museum is now located within the borders of the Westchester district of Los Angeles, and is open only on Wednesdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 PM. The residence has period furniture and artifacts from the late 1800's, and the land office building from the same period is located next door.
