Centwine was the king of Wessex from 676 until 685. Born in or before 643, he succeeded Aescwine as the son of Cynegils and the brother of Cenwalh. He won three notable battles over the Cornish, especially the one of 682, but Bede also notes a period of division in the Kingdom of Wessex, about which little is known. Some sources claim he died in 685, others that he abdicated and entered the priesthood.
