The name of Chadwell Heath, in east London, is often falsely connected with a visit by St. Chad to take the waters from the well on the heath. In fact, a more likely origin is from the Cauld (cold) well on the heath. The heath itself was infamous because of highwaymen, their presence diminished by the installation of a turnpike near the site of the current Tollgate public house.
