Chantelle was a popular merengue musical group from Puerto Rico, which performed from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. The name "Chantelle" is a girl's name in French (translated to "Chantal in Spanish and English.
Formed in 1988, Chantelle was an all female music group, which is somewhat of a rarity for tropical music bands. One of their few precedesors in that respect was "Las Chicas del Can", a somewhat popular salsa group, also from Puerto Rico, that surfaced during the middle 1980s.
In 1989, Chantelle hit the Puerto Rican and Latin American airwaves with their biggest hit, "Aunque tu no Quieras" ("Even if you Don't Want to"). That song was about a girl telling her boyfriend that they had to separate, despite their feelings. This song gave Chantelle a lot of television and radio coverage, and the three girls in the group became famous women, although Olga Tanon became the most famous of the three.
"Chantelle" went on recording CDs until 1992, when Tanon decided to go on and try a career as a solo singer. Her career has been very successful and she is one of the best known "merengueras" of her era.
Chantelle is also the name of a French women's underwear trademark. Chantelle undewear is also very popular with women of other European countries, specially Great Britain.
Chantelle is a commune of the Allier département in France.
