Charenton-le-Pont or simply Charenton is a commune of the Val-de-Marne département, in France. Population (1999): 26,582.

History

Charenton was the site of an insane asylum, known for its humanitarian treatment of patients. The Marquis de Sade, Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade, was held at the Charenton asylum until his death in 1814 at the age of 74.
