Born in Sterling, Connecticut, Dow never finished high school. He saw the need for an index to probe the New York Stock Exchange activity. He also put together the Dow Theory. He had four wives, and an obsessive disorder relating to other women. In other words he was a complete womanizer.

Dow died in Brooklyn, New York.
