Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,979 km² (1,150 mi²). 2,843 km² (1,098 mi²) of it is land and 136 km² (53 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.57% water.

The county is divided into twenty-five townships: Bryan, Castalia, Carroll, Choteau Creek, Darlington, Forbes, Goose Lake, Hamilton, Highland, Howard, Jackson, Kennedy, La Roche, Lake George, Lawrence, Lone Tree, Moore, Platte, Plain Center, Rhoda, Roe, Rouse, Signal, Waheheh, White Swan.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,350 people, 3,343 households, and 2,326 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (8/mi²). There are 3,853 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 69.65% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 28.28% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 1.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,343 households out of which 34.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.40% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.37.

In the county, the population is spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 23.20% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.
