Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer is the son of Edward Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, and his first wife, the former Frances Ruth Burke Roche (later Shand Kydd). He is the brother of Diana, Princess of Wales. He was divorced from his first wife, (Catherine) Victoria Lockwood, by whom he has four children, including the current Viscount Althorp, Louis. Lord Spencer subsequently married Caroline Hutton Freud, by whom he has a second son, Edmund.

He held the office of Page of Honour to Queen Elizabeth II from 1977 to 1979.
