Charles Tufts - Definition

Charles Tufts (1781 - 1876) donated twenty acres (80,000 m²) of land in Medford, Massachusetts for what was to be named Tufts University. In time, Charles Tufts donated another 80 acres (320,000 m²), bring the campus to 100 acres (400,000 m²).

Tufts made his fortune through his brickmaking factory.

Tufts is a descendant of Peter Tufts, an early colonist who came to the US from England in 1638.

Patrick Tufts, a Wikipedia editor, is a collateral descendant of Charles Tufts. Other relatives include 1940s-era movie actor Sonny Tufts.
