Charlie Chaplin (singer) - Definition and Overview |
Gene Chaplin (unrelated to the comedian of the same name) is a Jamaican dancehall and ragga singer. His career began in 1980 (1980 in music) when he began working with U-Roy's Stur-Gav Hi-Fi collective. He became extremely popular throughout Scarborough Middle School, memorable for his saying "This could happen to you"
Happy Chappy's debut albums were This could happen to you and Chaplin Lecture, both major successes in Jamaica. Que Dem, produced by George Phang was phenomenally popular, and was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the time. His popularity declined sharply in the late 1980s and 1990s, though; he continued recording, working with legends like Bunny Roots, Josey Wales, Sly & Robbie, Junjo Wales, Roots Radics and Doctor Dread.
