Chatten (Catti), a historic German tribe settled in the area of modern-day northern Hesse. Ancestors of the Hessians. They succeeded in avoiding Roman subjugation, and Rome had to construct the Limes border fortification along the southern edge of their land across southern Hesse. The tribe was allied with the Cheruskers (Cherusci) and other northern German tribes under Hermann (Arminius) in their resistance against Roman attempts to conquer northern Germany, culminating in Hermann's annihilation of three Roman legions under Varus in 9 AD in the battle of Teutoburger Wald.
