Chicago developed a hardcore punk scene in the early '80's that was more experimental than it's counterparts in Washington, DC, L.A., and New York City.
Chicago's hardcore scene developed in and around Northside gay bars around 1982. The most popular of thse bands were Naked Raygun, Strike Under, The Effigies, and Big Black. A hardcore scene also developed in nearby Evanston, Illinois, the home of Northwestern University, and Champaign, Illinois, the location of the University of Illinois.
