Chigwell is a place in the Epping Forest district of Essex. It is inside the M25, has a London Underground station and a London (020) area code, but it is outside the Greater London border.

Chigwell was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and later lauded by Charles Dickens in the novel Barnaby Rudge, where The Maypole inn is said to have been based on the village's King's Head pub. Charles Dickens later set up residence in Chigwell and during his stay described it as "The finest place to live." Traditionally a farming community, Chigwell now has many wealthy suburban homes, including one particularly wealthy road namely ‘Manor Road’ (which featured in the popular English sit com “Birds Of A Feather.”) Manor Road is home to many celebrities and stars including England World Cup Winner the late Bobby Moore, and ex West Ham player Paulo Di Canio. Chigwell is situated just 40 minutes from central London by train.

During the 1960's Chigwell faced change when confronted with ever growing counter urbanistaion, Former Town Mayor Sam Grace led the bustling hamlet from a rural farming community to a post modern suburban paradise, but has now degeneated into town "whit". Recent events include Michael Thorne and trophy wife Christina Peach, Turner Prize Winner (1988) setting up residence.
