The Chinese Taipei national football team is the official name given by FIFA to the national football team of the Republic of China. Although the Republic of China has only been in control of Taiwan and some other islands since 1949 any reference to a national sports team from the island as "Taiwan" would be certain to irritate the government of the People's Republic of China as suggestive of Taiwan independence. The official name "Republic of China" was also unacceptable because the PRC considers it to be a defunct entity. Therefore, the name "Chinese Taipei" was selected as a compromise.

The Chinese Taipei Football Association (CTFA), was founded in China as the China Football Association in 1924 and relocated to Taiwan in 1949 at the end of the Chinese Civil War. It joined FIFA in 1954. The team, playing as "Taiwan," finished third in the Asian Cup in 1960.
