Chrysler Slant 6 engine - Definition and Overview

The Slant 6 is one of Chrysler's two most famous automobile engines, along with the Chrysler Hemi engine. The engine is a straight-6 piston engine designed so the cylinder line is at a 30-degree angle from vertical. In essence, the Slant 6 is half of a 60-degree V12. In other words, the engine is designed to be slanted, not slanted after the fact like the Honda S2000 and BMW M6.

The engine was introduced in 1960 on the Valiant, and was used in America until 1983 in cars, 1987 in trucks, and 1991 for marine use. It was still being built in Mexico as of 2003.

The Slant 6 gained a reputation for indestructibility, and it also proved to have good performance for such a relatively small engine (by contemporary North American standards), although the factory-equipped single-barrel carburetor fitted to most cars did not allow the engine to reach its full potential.

170

The 170 (2.8 liter) slant-6 was built from 1960 to 1971, with the last two years being export-only. It had a 3.40 (86 mm) bore and 3.125 in (79 mm) stroke.

The 170 slant-6 was used in the following vehicles:

198

The 198 (3.3 liter) slant-6 had a raised deck for a longer 3.64 in (92 mm) stroke. It was used from 1970 until 1974 in the following vehicles:

225

The 225 (3.7 liter) slant-6 was the longest-lived version, introduced in 1960 and made until 1987. It shared the same 3.40 in (86 mm) bore with the rest of the family but was stroked to 4.125 in (105 mm). Pollution controls were added in 1973, and hydraulic lifters in 1981.

The 225 slant-6 was used in the following:

Super Six

In the late 1970's and early 1980's, the Slant 6 engine was produced (in limited quantities) with a special 2-barrel carburetor and intake manifold. This variant was termed the "Super Six" by Chrysler, and Super Six engines were externally denoted by a special sticker on the air cleaner. The 2-barrel carburetor used in the Super Six was the same as the one used in 2-barrel 318 engine applications.

The Super Six was used in the following:
