Cichlasoma is a genus of fish in the cichlid family.
Formally a very large genus covering cichlids from Texas, North America through Mexico, all of Central America to parts of South America.
Reclassification and subsequent splitting of the genus by Ichthyologists has resulted in many of the former species classified in the genus Cichlasoma now being placed within separate genus'.
Cichlasoma genus now consists of a few fish found in South America and a few that have not been redescribed into another genus.
