City Pages - Definition and Overview

City Pages is an alternative weekly newspaper serving the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. It features news, film and theatre reviews, and is heavily loaded with classifieds and other advertisements. It is printed in a tabloid format, and is available for free.

The paper frequently runs articles covering the happenings in area radio and television. Most of the paper's articles from the mid-1990s onward are available on City Pages website. "Best of the Twin Cities" awards are listed each year, covening a wide range of topics such as the best meal under $5, best sex shop, and the best radio and television personalities. The awards can often reflect frustraction—for instance, the 2004 award for "Best TV Weatherperson" went to the computerized voice reading aviation weather on KTCI channel 17.

Circulation for City Pages is reported to be around 26.7% of the Twin Cities market.

City Pages was purchased by New York's Village Voice in the late 1990s. The Voice also purchased the Twin Cities Reader around the same time, but shut that paper down.
