The City Press is a sunday newspaper that is aimed at black readers and is the third biggest selling newspaper in South Africa. The City Press is distributed nationally and neighbouring countries including Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland. It comands a readership of 2.5 million (Source: AMPS 2001A).
It was established in 1982 as the Goldern City Press by Jim Bailey and the South African Associated Newspapers (SAAN). The following year Goldern was dropped from the name. SAAN later withdrew from its partnership and the paper ran into financial difficulties. On the 1 April 1984 Nasionale Pers (Naspers) took over.
