City of London School for Girls - Definition and Overview

City of London School for Girls (CLSG) is an independent girls' school located in the Barbican Estate complex in the City of London in London, United Kingdom. It is the sister school of the City of London School (a superior boys' school located directly on the banks of the River Thames) and the City of London Freemen's School (a co-educational school located in Surrey). Intake is from age 7 to 18, though many of its pupils enter at 11, and similarly join other independent schools for the sixth form (16-18)

The school has a growing academic reputation which is demonstrated in rising league table results but the charge of anti-intellectualism in favour of exam performance is a growing one. The girls school has long been the butt of many popular jokes from its older and more prestigious partner school. The school has responded in recent years by demonstrating that despite glass ceilings in the work place they will continue to try to outmatch the boys. CLS legend has it that the current headmistress worked in a burlesque parlour in Saint Denis, Paris. One former headmistress was famed for her short hair, strong opinions on men and distinctive monocle. Former pupils include Dido.
