On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (also known as CRA '68), which was meant as a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The act prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing. It also provided protection for civil rights workers. It is also known as the Housing Act of 1968, or the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

Its passing was largely spurred by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in the same year.
