Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,507 km² (968 mi²). 2,481 km² (958 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

The county is divided into twenty-seven townships: Ash, Blaine, Collins, Cottonwood, Darlington, Day, Eden, Elrod, Fordham, Foxton, Garfield, Hague, Lake, Lincoln, Logan, Maydell, Merton, Mount Pleasant, Pleasant, Raymond, Richland, Rosedale, Spring Valley, Thorp, Warren, Washington, and Woodland.

The racial makeup of the county is 98.65% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
