Climax, Michigan - Definition

Climax is a village in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 791. The village is located within Climax Township on the northern boundary with Charleston Township. Climax shares a school district with Scotts, and is within easy driving distance of Galesburg, Vicksburg, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek, Michigan.

Almost everything in Climax is located on the main cross streets, Main and Maple. The school, cemetery, Harvester restaurant, and hair salon all lie along South Main St. North Main boasts the relatively new music studio (housed in what used to be an independent hardware store), Joe's Village Takeout (a convenience store), the village library, park, phone company and post office, the bank, a makeshift church (residing in a former gas station), a few homes, and the town newspaper: the Climax Crescent (http://www.climaxcrescent.com). Maple is almost entirely residential, with the exception of the United Methodist Church and Sinclair's Market.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 791 people, 279 households, and 212 families residing in the village. The population density is 296.5/km² (769.9/mi²). There are 291 housing units at an average density of 109.1/km² (283.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.08% White, 0.88% African American, 0.63% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.14% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 3.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 279 households out of which 41.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% are married couples living together, 7.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.0% are non-families. 19.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.28.

In the village the population is spread out with 31.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 7.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $44,464, and the median income for a family is $50,625. Males have a median income of $35,833 versus $27,604 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,658. 4.7% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.5% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
