Clinton County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 9,634. Its name is in honor of the seventh Governor of New York State, DeWitt Clinton. Its county seat is Albany, Kentucky6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 532 km² (206 mi²). 511 km² (197 mi²) of it is land and 21 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.94% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,634 people, 4,086 households, and 2,811 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (49/mi²). There are 4,888 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 99.09% White, 0.10% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. 1.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,086 households out of which 29.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.50% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the county the population is spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $19,563, and the median income for a family is $25,919. Males have a median income of $21,193 versus $16,194 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,286. 25.80% of the population and 20.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.80% of those under the age of 18 and 29.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
