College Republicans - Definition and Overview

The College Republicans is the section of the Republican Party of the United States for college and university students. It is represented nationally by College Republican National Committee which organizes and assists chapters nation wide. The first chapter was started at the University of Michigan in 1892. Notable College Republicans include Karl Rove, Lee Atwater and Grover Norquist. Today there are over 1140 chapters across the United States with over 130,000 students.

Activities

The College Republicans' activities vary from chapter to chapter. Typical activities include inviting guest speakers (often elected officials or party activists), arranging for members of the club to work on campaigns, and organizing students for letter-writing campaigns or phone banks. Local clubs also organize voter registration drives.
