According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,386 km² (535 mi²). 1,379 km² (532 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 112,075 people, 42,973 households, and 30,682 families residing in the county. The population density is 81/km² (210/mi²). There are 46,083 housing units at an average density of 33/km² (86/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.43% White, 2.20% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 42,973 households out of which 31.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.10% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.60% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
