Converge - Definition and Overview

Converge is a band from Massachusetts. The band's music and influences are a blend of extreme metal and hardcore punk. In contrast to bands of either genre, whose lyrics tend to deal either with the occult on the one hand, or the political on the other, Converge's lyrics deal almost exclusively with the pain resulting from romantic love of a man for a woman gone awry - these lyrics are generally completely indiscernible however, and must be read from lyric sheets, as is usual in the genre. In recent years Converge have enjoyed relatively high levels of popularity given the extreme nature of their music, particularly the screamed vocals and often complicated brutality of the guitar riffs. Their records have become concomittently more expensively and extensively produced, and they have moved from the independent hardcore lable Equal Vision Records to the much larger, although still independent, punk label Epitaph.

Converge's singer, and other members of the line-up at various times, are straight-edge, though the band is not a straight-edge band.
