The Coppertone girl is a little girl first shown in illustrations in Coppertone suntan product advertising in 1959. Her bathing suit bottom is being tugged at by a Scottish terrier dog. This image debuted in certain now-famous suntan lotion advertisements run for many years by the Coppertone company.
The original artist, Joyce Ballantyne Brand, created this iconic image using her daughter Cheri as model.
As a 3-year-old child actress, Jodie Foster made her acting debut as the Coppertone girl in a television commercial.
At the turn of the 21st century, Coppertone revised drawings of the Coppertone Girl, so that they would be less revealing. Recent versions show only the girl's lower back, as opposed to her buttocks.
