Cosey Fanni Tutti was born Christine Carole Newby on 4 November 1951, in England, Hull, Yorkshire.
She's best known for her time in Throbbing Gristle and Chris & Cosey. Chris in C&C is Chris Carter, her husband and father of her son, Nick, as well as another member of TG.
Before both of these she was a performer with COUM Transmissions, in 1969 with Genesis P-Orridge, who was her constant companion of many years. Her addition likely changed the nature of this odd and whimsical group which, when she joined, was still mostly a musical venture. From that point on, COUM performances became events or, in sixties parlance, happenings, involving props, costumes, movements, improvisation and aspects of street theater, something that she'd already been involved in with GP-O when they were living in a commune.
Cosey's released and continues to release many solo recordings, including a retrospective deluxe box set with many photos and text, called Time To Tell and she continues perform as she has done since the 1960s as a performance artist in the Dada tradition as well as the pornographic and cabaret traditions.
CFT had a long career in the pornographic film and print industries.
Her name came about in 1973 after having formally changed it from Cosmosis. Prior to that she'd already distanced herself from the name Christine and was known as Carol. According to John Ford, CFT was suggested to her by Robin Klassnick the mail artist, and it comes from the opera by Mozart.
In honor of the dawn of the 21st Century, Chris & Cosey changed its name to Carter Tutti.
In 2004, after 23 years apart, TG reunited, with all four original members, for recordings and events.
