Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils - Definition

The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC or CLRC) is a UK government body that carries out civil research in science and engineering.

It employs about 1700 staff at three locations:

• Chilbolton Observatory, near Stockbridge in Hampshire
• Daresbury Laboratory. at Daresbury in Cheshire
• Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, near Abingdon in Oxfordshire

The Diamond Light Source is being built on the Rutherford Appleton site. Funded by CCLRC and the Wellcome Trust, it is due to open in 2006.
