Cowboy Junkies - Definition and Overview

Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian country music and alternative rock band, formed by three siblings from the Timmins entertainment family. Another sibling, Cali, rose to fame as an actress on Ryan's Hope. (The Timmins siblings are descendants of a mining prospector who founded the Ontario city of Timmins.)

The group formed in Toronto in 1985.

The band's name presumably came from their slow, atmospheric take on country music, especially evident on the album The Trinity Session which was recorded in a church in Toronto. This album also included a unique cover version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane". Reed reportedly liked the Junkies' version of the song better than his own, and began performing their version in concert.

RCA Records, the band's label from 1988 to 1996, has also released two best-of albums. These were compiled without the band's approval or authorization, and Internet fansites dedicated to the band usually recommend that fans purchase Waltz Across America instead:
