The Crawford Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire is a steep and narrow gorge formed between the southern end of the Presidential Range and the northern edge of the Willey Range. Named for Abel Crawford, an explorer, trail-builder and hostelier in the early nineteenth century, the path and eventual railroad through Crawford Notch opened a new path through the White Mountains for settlers of the Lancaster area to reach Conway on the way to the trading ports on the coast. Discovered circa 1771. Located in the towns of Carroll and the unincorporated area of Hart's Location, the gorge is bisected by U.S. Highway 302, which runs alongside the Saco River.
