Collinsworth was a professional football player, playing for eight years (1981-1988) as a wide receiver with the Cincinnati Bengals, playing his college football at the University of Florida, and was drafted in the second round by the Bengals in 1981. During his NFL career, he appeared in three Pro Bowl games, and played in Super Bowl XVI and XXIII.

After his football career ended, he began his broadcasting career as a reporter for HBO's Inside the NFL. In 1990, he became a part of NBC Sports' NFL broadcasts, as well as some of the college programming. He joined the NBC pregame show in 1996, and earned an Emmy in 1997. In 1998, Collinsworth joined FOX NFL Sunday after NBC lost the rights to AFC broadcasts to CBS. In 2002, Collinsworth became part of the lead broadcast team, along with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, replacing Pat Summerall and John Madden, the former retiring and the latter joining ABC for their Monday Night Football telecasts with Al Michaels. The team worked Super Bowl XXXIX three years later.
