Crist Crist

Crist - Definition

Crist is a poem by the medieval poet Cynewulf, written in Anglo-Saxon.

Together with Beowulf it is one of the primary examples of Anglo-Saxon literature.

The poem was one of the inspirations for J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth - Earendel becoming Eärendil.

Excerpt

Éala Éarendel / Engla Beorhtast
Ofer Middangeard / Monnum sended,
Ond sóðfæsta / Sunnan léoma,

Translation into Modern English:

Hail, Earendel / Brightest of angels,
Above the Middle-earth / Sent unto men
And true / Radiance of the sun
Bright above the stars / Thou every season
Of thy very self / Illuminest for ever.
