United States rail crossing with corssbucks (Look on the top of the pole in the foreground)
Crossbucks are the US standard roadsign meaning "railroad crossing" (grade crossing). It is composed of two slats of wood or metal, of equal length (About a foot) fastened together on a pole in an + or greek cross formation, but rotated 45 degrees. One carries the word "RAILROAD", the other "CROSSING". At many crossings they are supplimented by electrical warnings of usually, flashing lights, a bell, and in some cases a metal arm that descends, blocking the road and preventing drivers from crossing the track.
