Cudjoe Key - Definition and Overview

Cudjoe Key is a census-designated place and town located in Monroe County, Florida, on an island of the same name in the Florida Keys. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,695.

Geography

Cudjoe Key is located at 24°39'51" North, 81°28'56" West (24.664298, -81.482339)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.6 km² (5.6 mi²). 13.6 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.93% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,695 people, 799 households, and 541 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 124.9/km² (323.6/mi²). There are 1,482 housing units at an average density of 109.2/km² (282.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.22% White, 0.88% African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 5.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 799 households out of which 15.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.0% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.12 and the average family size is 2.43.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 12.2% under the age of 18, 3.7% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 38.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 108.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 109.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $57,500, and the median income for a family is $59,883. Males have a median income of $36,094 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $27,085. 5.8% of the population and 4.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
