Cullman County is a county of the State of Alabama. Its name is in honor of Colonel Johann G. Kullmann. As of 2000 the population was 77,483. Its county seat is Cullman.

History

Cullman County was established on January 24, 1877.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,955 km² (755 mi²). 1,913 km² (738 mi²) of it is land and 42 km² (16 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.17% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 77,483 people, 30,706 households, and 22,476 families residing in the county. The population density is 41/km² (105/mi²). There are 35,233 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (48/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.81% White, 0.96% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 30,706 households out of which 32.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.80% are married couples living together, 8.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.80% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.30% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 28.30% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,256, and the median income for a family is $39,341. Males have a median income of $30,444 versus $20,436 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,922. 13.00% of the population and 9.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.50% of those under the age of 18 and 16.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
