Cutco is the name of a brand of kitchen knives that were sold door-to-door by salespeople. The salespeople were often young, impressionable people who had been told that it was possible to become fabulously rich and successful by selling Cutco knives. The young people were instructed in the art of extolling the amazing virtues of the Cutco cutlery, and in learning how to 'close the deal' with prospective customers.
While it may be true that some salespeople made a lot of money selling Cutco, it is probable that a very extraordinary degree of charisma, charm and guile were required to get the average door-to-door customer to part with several hundred of their hard-earned dollars for some fancy kitchen knives.
The selling of Cutco knives, as practiced in the 1980's at least, followed in the venerable tradition of the vacuum cleaner salesman of earlier times, whos proverbial 'foot-in-the-door' was just the beginning of a well-practiced sales pitch aimed at the lonely/gullible/bored housewife.
