The Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) was founded in 1997 as a professional sports tournament for computer gamers. It holds tournaments world-wide with cash prizes. Angel Munoz is the President and Founder of the CPL.
In their Summer 2004 event, the CPL announced its largest event ever, the World Tour. The event is planned to take place throughout the 2005 calender year, with a total of 10 international stops. The grand purse of the event is 1 million USD. The surprising part of the announcement was that the World Tour game was not Counter-Strike, the game that helped the CPL reach its popularity. At first, speculation around the game the CPL would choose as their World Tour game was centered around, the then unreleased, Doom 3 first-person shooter. However, due to the discontent in the gaming community and the slow pace of the game, the CPL decided to switch the World Tour game to Painkiller.
