Cybill Cybill

Cybill - Definition and Overview

Cybill was a sitcom that ran from 1995 to 1998 with Cybill Shepherd in the lead role. Like Absolutely Fabulous, the main character had a disapproving daughter and a best friend (played by Christine Baranski) whose heavy drinking, sexy image and self-indulgent behavior provided much of the humor. Cybill's character in the show was a somewhat faded television actress and unlike Edina Monsoon was somewhat likeable and had some redeeming character traits. For much of the series, her rival for acting jobs was Andrea (played by Morgan Fairchild), who was injured badly when Cybill accidentally shoved her down a hill.

In comparison to Absolutely Fabulous the content was much toned down, possibly because of self-censorship and to fit better in the US sitcom tradition.
