Cynic (band) - Definition and Overview |
Cynic is a band that was formed in Florida, America, in 1987 by vocalist/guitarist Paul Masvidal, guitarist Jason Gobel, bassist Mark Van Erp, and drummer Sean Reinert.
Mark van Erp was replaced by Tony Choy and the band recorded various demos. The first have a traditional death metal sound, but the in the later ones things changed toward a highly complex, experimental and extremely technical form of metal. Many influences from jazz and fusion can be heard in their first, and only, album: Focus (which was recorded in 1993 with new bass player Sean Malone.)
Cynic disbanded during the fall of 1994 while working on a new album. The reason stated was artistic differences - the inability to agree on which direction to follow - and so the split was amicable.
Ex-members went on their separate ways (Sean Malone and Sean Reinert were session members in Aghora) but some of them re-formed as Portal.
