Sir Cyril Townsend entered the Parliament of the United Kingdom in 1974 after worldwide service in the British Army.

He was elected Conservative party Member of Parliament for Bexleyheath in 1974 (twice), 1979, 1983, 1987 and 1992.

Introduced the private member's bill that became the Protection of Children Act 1978.

Former Director of the Council for the Advancement of Arab-British Understanding.
