DJ Quik - Definition and Overview

DJ Quik, born David Blake (January 18, 1970) is a West Coast rapper and producer from Compton, California. Assisting to define the West Coast sound that dominated the national mainstream airwaves in the West's dominance of the 1990's, DJ Quik produced various hits and albums, some of which have gone gold.

Among his albums are Balance & Options, Quik Is The Name, Rhythm-al-ism, Safe & Sound, Way 2 Fonky, and Unda The Influence. His two best sellers are Quik Is The Name and Safe & Sound. The latter was his only album executive produced by Suge Knight, with whom DJ Quik signed on to Death Row Records under his real name David Blake. During his stay, he recorded perhaps his biggest hit single, "Dollaz And Cents," which was a "diss track" to Compton rapper MC Eiht on the Death Row Murder Was The Case compilation. Other hits from DJ Quik are "Summer Breeze," "Pitch In Ona Party," and "Tonite," most which never picked up outside of the West Coast.

Today, Quik is still producing, and trying to get West Coast rap repopularized outside of the West Coast and back into the mainstream. Quik, along with many other West Coast artists, have accused the industry of "black balling" the West Coast from the mainstream because of its lyrical content.

DJ Quik has also worked with Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, The Outlawz, Dr. Dre, and various others from the West Coast rap scene.
